How Do We Come Up With Content Ideas?

We often get the question, how does Good Monster come up with content ideas so often, and so quickly?

So to answer this question we thought it might be appropriate to go through the step by step ideation process that we use. And yes, this is literally the process that we use with every tweet, infographic, video, and email that we produce for our clients.

Let’s start out by listing the questions that we ask ourselves or our clients:

  1. Who are we targeting?
  2. What is our goal?
  3. What is the audience over-informed about?
  4. What will catch their attention?
  5. What are our resources?
  6. What is the platform?
  7. How will we measure results?

With these questions already systemized, we simply gather the team and answer the questions based on audience research that we – or our clients -have done.

So let’s take a look at how we applied this system to the exact blog post you are reading right now.

Who are we targeting?

For the blog post “How Does Good Monster Come Up With Ideas?”, we are targeting CEOs and CMOs of SMBs (small- to medium-sized businesses), entrepreneurs, and other marketing professionals. The ideal reader is looking for ways to streamline their own marketing ideas, or they are looking for an experienced marketing company to handle their organization’s content marketing.

What is our goal?

Our goal is to give our reader a short read that explains exactly how to come up with ideas in under an hour (that doesn’t include the production of content ideas). We want them (you) to be able to read this post in under 5 minutes, but retain its information and save it for later use.

What is the audience over-informed about?

Our audience is over-informed about how to post on social media networks, and how to engage their customers. So we will take a different angle and show how we do the hard stuff, i.e. coming up with ideas on a daily basis.

What would catch their attention?

Examples or case studies of “how other people do it” are very popular because they display a type of social proof – they show that someone is doing this successfully. Also, short reads and infographics are popular because they are easily digestible. And infographics specifically are visually engaging and are prime for re-sharing on social media platforms. For this reason, providing these types of content will be highly valuable for our audience.

What are our resources?

We have in house copywriters and graphic designers that can quickly create written and visual content to create a blog post with great flow. We also have use of Piktochart, a free infographic creation platform. This will speed up the production of a high-quality infographic.

What is the platform? blog will serve as the hub for the content. Piktochart will be used to quickly make a high-quality, beautiful infographics. In order to drive traffic to the post, Good Monster CEO John Timmerman will write a summary post about “coming up with ideas” using LinkedIn’s post feature, and linking it to the post on Good Monster’s blog.

How will we measure it?

We measure all incoming traffic to Good Monster’s website using Google Analytics. In addition, we will be sharing this post several times and various social media networks over the next few months. Engagement on these posts will also be measured to learn more about our audiences’ interests.
